Region Kronoberg invests heavily in Kattalo

Region Kronoberg, which includes eight municipalities, invests heavily in improving reading development through a strategic collaboration with Kattalo. From the school year 2023/2024, around 13,500 children in preschool and primary school will have access to Kattalo.

In a region where only 80.7% (2022) of Year 9 students qualify for upper secondary school, a strong conviction emerges: early intervention is the key to change.

Tina Sundberg, Development Manager at Av-Media Region Kronoberg, expresses the region's commitment clearly: "We believe in improving our children's future by strengthening their reading skills. The collaboration with Kattalo is part of our strategy."

At a time when the international PIRLS study shows worrying reductions in reading ability among Swedish fourth graders, Region Kronoberg is taking an important and proactive step through early interventions in preschool and elementary school.

"Av-Media Region Kronoberg and the region should be seen as great examples for others regarding how structured and committed they rolled out the teaching material during the year. More people should follow their model.” , says Pether Wiklander, CEO at Kattalo.

During the 2022/2023 school year, the region has implemented a full-scale pilot project with Kattalo in which over 120 preschools and primary schools chose to participate. The pilot project started stealthily already in the spring of 2022 with a handful of schools which were also the starting point for the ambassador group, with representatives from all municipalities, which was built up during the year. The group's purpose was partly to inspire colleagues but also to take part in Kattalo's development process.

"The response in the user surveys has been very positive. What has made the biggest impression about Kattalo is how popular it is with both teachers and students, how committed the Kattalo team is, and how quickly the results are visible. Teachers who were previously skeptical of digital tools have found it simple and time-saving with Kattalo," says Tina.

The goal for the autumn is clear and strong: Region Kronoberg now aims to include all preschools in the successful Kattalo initiative.
